The city, caught in a breath of light.

Erica Norelius paints the rhythm of the city—rain-slicked streets, glowing intersections, and fleeting moments caught between light and shadow. Seen from the pedestrian’s vantage, her works immerse viewers in the geometry of urban life, where cool blue shadows meet the warm glow of street lamps and reflections shimmer across wet pavement. With painterly realism and atmospheric depth, she transforms everyday scenes into quiet narratives, revealing the beauty and poetry that live within the ordinary.

For Norelius, a cityscape is as much a landscape as any mountain or meadow—an environment in which we live, fleeting and man-made, shaped by the conception of each building and the patterns of its streets. Unlike the singular light of a traditional landscape, the city hums with multiple light sources: headlights, neon, windows, and streetlamps, all pulsing with human energy. Yet she approaches this vibrancy as a meditative observer—introverted, reflective, and intent on capturing small vignettes of life that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Her process begins on the street, camera in hand, searching for moments that hold both compositional clarity and emotional resonance. Back in the studio, she distills hundreds of photographs to just one or two worthy of becoming paintings. From there, she creates a notan sketch in ink or digitally, reducing the scene to three or four value shapes—a foundation inspired by John Singer Sargent, whose mastery of large value arrangements continues to influence her work. Shapes are refined, values adjusted, and colors pared down to a limited palette, allowing her to push hue relationships in subtle yet striking ways. The final painting emerges over days or weeks, most often in the studio, though she maintains her plein air practice with a weekly painting group to keep her sensitivity to real-world color alive.

Erica Norelius earned her BFA from the Academy of Art University in 2008 and her MA in Fine Art in 2019. Her work has been featured in International Artist magazine, Southwest Art, and on the cover of Cornell’s Epoch literary magazine. She has been recognized as a multiple-time Art Renewal Center finalist, 2017 grant recipient for a plein air painting trip to Zacatlán, Mexico, and first-place winner in the Richeson75 Figure and Portrait competition. In 2024, she served as juror for BoldBrush’s October competition. Her awards include Second Honors at the Portrait Society of America’s International Competition (2015).
A dedicated educator, she teaches drawing, oil painting, and portraiture, sharing her knowledge of composition, value structure, and painterly technique with emerging artists. Norelius’s work is represented by Lovett’s Gallery (Tulsa, OK), Ferleman & Company (Cumberland, MD), and Studio Gallery (San Francisco, CA). Public and private collections include Cornell University, Disney Tokyo, the Hyatt Times Square, and Jack Richeson & Co. She is a member of the California Art Club.
